Volunteer with 18 Reasons
18 Reasons is a nonprofit that increases food security through the power of home cooking - and our work is made possible by a vibrant team of volunteers. Volunteers support two different food education programs, each of which has different onboarding steps and roles for volunteers:
- Cooking Matters offers classes free of charge to children and adults throughout the Bay Area’s most under-resourced neighborhoods. Volunteers commit to 3 hours a week for a 6-week series, and fill the roles of Chef Educator, Nutrition Educator, and Class Assistant.
- 18th Street Kitchen in San Francisco offers paid classes for curious home cooks with the means to pay for instruction. Volunteers support both back and front of house, and work closely with our Chef Instructors. Shifts last for 6 hours on weeknights and weekends.
Volunteers are an essential part of our organization! We strive to make your experience educational, fulfilling, and fun. We hope that your service will be a valuable experience that contributes to your life outside the classroom.

Additional Volunteer Opportunities
Additionally, we welcome volunteers for support with independent projects and fundraising events. If you have a skill that you wish to offer (social media, photography, nonprofit event experience, etc.), please email us at info@18reasons.org.
Staying in Touch as a Volunteer
We invite active volunteers to socials and gatherings throughout the year - and you can also join your fellow volunteers in our 18 Reasons Volunteers Facebook group. Thank you for your service to our organization and community!
