THIS WEEK: Charly Nelson, Survey|Edge
The Gallery at 18 Reasons is pleased to present new photographs by Charly Nelson. Nelson maps the natural and constructed boundaries of agricultural production in her new body of work, Survey|Edge. These photographs—taken through the tiny windows of standard commercial airline jets—show overlapping systems of boundaries dictated both by the natural systems and man-made networks. What is our relationship to these boundaries and how do we take them in? What forces expose the susceptibility of our boundaries? How shall we consider the vulnerable sources of our everyday sustenance?
When viewing these works, perspective shifts as peaks and valleys become flat/2d patterns aided by the absence of color, distorting a recognizable aerial view to a wholly new composition. Paired with textured paper, these images become graphic landscapes on the page. Systems of organization and efficiency meet fluctuating boundaries of natural systems in photographic compositions of texture, shade and line.
Charly Nelson is a San Francisco-based photographer and filmmaker. Her photographic work focuses on abstractions and temporality of landscapes and, at times, the way people interact with it. Nelson earned a Master's degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania and a BA from Bennington College. She can be found online at: www.charlynelson.com.
